IWSG: The NaNoWriMo Edition... (#14)

Insecure Writers' Support Group (IWSG) is a really awesome meme that you should be doing along with the rest of us writers. Unless you truly are happy with your writing and don't feel the need to vent about your insecurities because they don't exist for you. But, really.... Don't they?
IWSG is hosted by Captain Ninja Alex at his blog, Alex J. Cavanaugh.

This month is Camp NaNoWriMo and I'm currently just beginning it. With such a huge push, at least for me (20,000 words), of words needing to be written by the end of July, I always fear something happening to me that will derail my efforts.

I've only ever tried NaNoWriMo a few years ago in November, and I got a bad cold two weeks in. I couldn't continue after that. This time, I hope to be able to meet my goal, which isn't as hard to reach as regular NaNo's 50,000 words, but it's still a stretch for me. I have the worst luck in getting things like this completed because something always happens to bump me off track.

I'm trying not to think about it and to just feel more positive about succeeding this time. If I sit around and wait for the other shoe to drop, the Universe will see to it that it happens. So, I'm trying to let myself be encouraged by all my cabin mates and keep my schedule as free for writing as possible.

Have you ever had issues with NaNoWriMo, or a long word project that you couldn't finish due to LIFE getting in the way?

Ugh, life.... Get a life and quit bothering me.

  1. It's 5k a week! You can do it Cathy... But remember, revision counts to your word count too (I've seen someone else mention this is in their rules) so even if you write and revise 10k in a month, its a WIN! :)

    Best of luck!

    1. @Shah: Thank you very much! This week is 4k for me because NaNo started on a Tuesday, but whatever. Thanks for the revision tip. I didn't know that and will keep it in mind.

  2. Every time I decide to join NaNo I've convinced from the start that I'm just not going to win. So I go into it guns blazing writing over my word count every day so that I can get a buffer just in case something bad happened. That first year I got sick too and I stopped writing for almost a week. Used up all of my buffer. So when I got better I spent every spare minute of the remaining days writing and it was exhausting. And when I won there was no parade. I didn't feel all that accomplished. Just relieved that it was over. What I mean to say is that the pressure to write can be overwhelming but a lot of the time most of it comes from yourself! This year I'm thinking of the NaNo as something fun to do and not the sole way I will get my writing done. So I've lowered my word count target and I'm going to spend a lot of time being more social so it's more fun. I have no idea what my point was but I think it's try not to put too much pressure on yourself and let's use the cabin for some fun down time when we need to talk to others who understand what we're doing.

    1. @Lan: Yeah, I think the cabinmates will help me get through NaNo this year! Everyone is fun and we get along already really well. I'll need that help.

  3. Just don't think about something derailing you. Block it out and just plow forth. You can do it!

  4. I rarely get distracted by life issues. However, I'm a perfectionist and tend to revise things into the ground because I'm not happy with them. (I've literally been working on a 3k chapter everyday for two weeks now - and I"m still not happy.) However, anything you get done before life gets in the way takes you another step closer to your goal. Even if things take longer than you want them to, being proud of it at the end is the most important goal! Good luck!

    1. @Lexa: You're right. Being proud of whatever I can accomplish at the end of it is all that really matters. Thanks so much. :)

  5. Even if life rears its head and smacks you around enough that you don't make your goal, that's still okay. The whole purpose of NaNo is to get you writing. So if you fall a little short of your goal, you're still a winner.

    1. @Ken: Thank you! I will remember that I'm a winner for just showing up and getting as much writing done as I can. It's the right attitude to have. :)

  6. You can do it!!

I struggled with NaNoWriMo last November, and barely scraped by on the last day. My problem is children. I feel obligated to actually pay attention to them, especially since they're young. Sheesh! :)

Life has it's way of disrupting writing, but I think you've set an achievable goal.

    1. @Loni: Yeah, that is very helpful. Set an achievable goal and it's much easier to reach it. Thanks for that!

  7. I'm doing it too. Come find me. I'm emaginette everywhere Igo. We can help each other. :-)

    1. @Anna: Okay, I'll see if I can find you. But, I'm in a cabin that might be at full capacity. I'm going to check into that and see if I can't invite you.

  8. You can do it! 20K is much more achievable than 50K. Just 1K a day and you've got the weekends off :-) (I know this is easier said than done, because I'm currently struggling too, but I think the beginning is always hardest. Once you've got several thousands words down and you're in the zone, it gets easier. I think!)

    1. @Rachel: Thank you! I am planning on writing just during the work week so I can take weekends off. So far, so good. I think I'll be okay. Good luck to you, too, on your NaNo novel! :)

    2. Just to let you know ... I'm seriously failing this Camp NaNoWriMo thing right now!!

    3. @Rach: Oh no! If only you had been able to join my cabin. We would have kept you on your toes. Maybe you'll be all right for the next NaNo. ;)

  9. Goals are made to be revised as needed. When life gets in the way, some writing is better than none. Also writing at odd times of day works too. Lately I've started waking up during the night and working for a few hours. It actually has been making me feel great getting more stuff done than I've been able to accomplish during my crazy days. Good luck!

    1. @Kim: You're right! Maybe when life gets in the way of our goals, it means our goals weren't right to begin with. I've also tried writing at odd times of the day, and that does help. Thanks so much for your comment! :)

  10. Good luck, Cathy! And yes, life can get in the way. That's why I try to write as much during that first week of NaNo as possible because I know something will come up. That said, writing any words is good and gets you one word closer to "The End." :)

    1. @Cherie: Thank you! I should have written more in the first week. That would have helped me a lot by now. I'm just trying to make up for it by the end of the month. But, any words are better than none!
