IWSG: The 'I'm a Dungeon Writer' Edition... (#31)

The Insecure Writer's Support Group (IWSG) is a monthly support system for blogging writers in need of finding other writers to connect with and share our deepest insecurities in a safe environment. Created by the clever Alex J. Cavanaugh with the expressed purpose to "share and encourage."

Yes, I've changed my blog theme!

This month's question is: Win or not, do you usually finish your NaNo project? Have any of them gone on to be published?

I have only ever "won" NaNoWriMo one time, and it was the Camp version of it where you could set your writing goal yourself, so I set it for 15k words and did win. Not too incredibly ambitious.

I'm not much of a NaNo person because I like writing at my own pace and not trying to keep up with other people. (AKA, I'm slow....) It seems to work well for social writers, but I am, most definitely, NOT a social writer. Stick me in a dungeon all by myself with a laptop computer and I'll be better off.

I've yet to publish anything, so I don't have the ability to say any of my NaNo projects have gone on to be published.

Well, that's all for me this month. Short and sweet.

Has NaNo made a difference in your writing life, unlike mine?

  1. Dungeon writer. Hmmm... that sounds like a good description for me. Just lock me in my office and let me write.

  2. Oh yes, I'm not a social writer either. And I write slow. Can so relate to what you're saying.

    1. Good to know I'm not alone in that. I would think writing was supposed to be very asocial, but some people turned it into something very social, like NaNoWriMo.

  3. I like the phrase 'dungeon writer.' I think it really applies to me, too!

  4. Hey! You got a new blog layout! It looks awesome! Nanowrimo isn't for everyone. At least you know what you're capable of and the kind of pacing that works for you.

I don't know if I'm a social writer or that I like being social about writing. When I'm actually doing the writing I prefer not to have distraction. Cannot wait until you finish a first draft though! 2018 is the year!

    1. Yes! I did new design a layout! I feel like it makes more sense for Regency Romance compared to my last one.

I feel like NaNo has turned writing into something more social than it ever has been before because you're writing with a ton of other people and all gabbing about it together. That just doesn't work for me. I hope 2018 is my year to actually finish and publish something, though I say that every year. :/

  5. I'm also a slow writer. I've beat NaNo before, but I won't tell you how many hours a day of writing it took to do that.

  6. I've always been intrigued by the Camp NaNo concept. I managed to pull off NaNo last year, but I wonder if setting a more realistic word count goal as part of the Camp version might result in a higher quality draft.

    1. I would think so because you could write slower, more carefully. If that's important to you on the first draft. I try not to obsess over that and just crap it out on the first draft.

  7. Oooo! I new look. I like! Isn’t writing a solitary act by nature?

    1. Thank you! Yep, writing is naturally solitary, but NaNoWriMo has turned it into something you can do along with thousands of other people and social media makes it so people can talk about their progress. That works for some people, but not for me. I just want to ignore everyone else who writes when I'm writing.

  8. I find it silly to say you "won" NaNo. Are you competing against something or someone?

I was really wondering what you meant by "Dungeon" writer but after you defined it I realize that perfectly describes me as well.

    1. Not really. Just trying to make it to 50k words. Good to know I've found a fellow dungeon writer!

  9. The social thing is what keeps you going on Nano. It really seems like it's not for you, Cathy.

    1. I know, I completely get that. That's why NaNo doesn't work for me. I just want everyone to go away when I write and leave me alone. The rub here is that one ought to do NaNo if that social aspect does actually help them.

  10. I like the new look. It's very neat and clean. :)

For me, I enjoyed the competitive aspect of NaNo and the general camaraderie, though my last NaNo was tough and I haven't tried it since.

    1. Thanks, Cherie! NaNo works for a lot of people for a lot reasons, but it's always hard. Unless you can take the month off of life and just write. Then it might be easy!

I would love to know what you think about this post! Leave me a comment. Thanks so much!
